guestroom (2023)
DESCRIPTION
guest room is an interactive fiction about sacrifice and desperation as part of THE HOUSE I GREW OLD IN body of work. It explores themes of mental illness, manipulation, and selfishness, through a text-based interactive experience. It was originally previewed on a 2000's era CRT monitor, during aajhh's MA end of course exhibition.
HISTORY
aajhh has been playing around with making video games since he was 17 years old. He started with RPGMaker, and created a few small
projects that will never see the light of day. In the final year of his BA, he played with ideas of portraying the uncanny and
unsettling through an interactive medium, as a game where the player has control over their own actions seemed like an ideal format
to create discomfort in an audience. In his MA he finally decided to commit fully to the idea and create a text adventure with Twine,
using it's Harlowe language, as well as HTML and CSS.
The game was built with the knowledge that it would be on display in a physical exhibition location and, in a stroke of luck, the university
had an old CRT monitor and all the needed adaptors for him to display the game as he had always envisioned it to be:
flickering, hard to read, and with the creeping knowledge that you are disrupting other people's experience of the exhibit.
